UPDATE: July 24, 2019 – Worldwide recall issued for textured breast implants tied to rare cancer

UPDATE: May 28, 2019 – Health Canada suspends Allergan’s licences for its Biocell breast implants after safety review concludes an increased risk of cancer

On April 4, 2019, Health Canada advised that it was suspending Allergan’s licenses for Biocell breast implants. Health Canada took this precautionary measure due to the serious risk of a rare breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) that is linked to the implants.

BIA-ALCL is a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (a cancer that affects the immune system) that can develop months or years after an implant surgery. Symptoms usually take years to develop and can present more than 10 years following implant surgery.

The implants were recalled by France’s National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products due to concerns for public safety. A day later Allergan stopped the sale of the implants in Europe. Allergan’s implants are currently being investigated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States, and other regulatory agencies.

Health Canada took action after receiving notice of 28 cases of BIA-ALCL (24 of which had a Biocell breast implants). Health Canada undertook a scientific assessment of macro-textured implants as part of a larger safety review.

On April 25, 2019, Health Canada announced that it had received a response from Allergan to its notice and is in the process of reviewing it. If unsatisfactory, the department will suspend the Biocell medical device license, ensuring the product will no longer be for sale in Canada.
