Some losses are so profound that words feel inadequate. The death of a child is among the heaviest burdens a parent can carry, and yet, in the midst of their darkest grief, one Mississauga family made a decision that is nothing short of extraordinary.
On April 2, 2025, Marco Di Bartolomeo, a vibrant 20-year-old from Ontario with his entire life ahead of him lost his life as a passenger in a car accident in Mississauga. He was someone’s son, someone’s friend, and by all accounts, someone who mattered deeply to those who knew him. He deserved more time. His family deserved more time with him.
And yet, in the hours that followed, when most of us would be consumed entirely by grief, Marco’s parents made a courageous and selfless choice: they said yes to organ donation. In doing so, they gave three other people the chance to live.
The Courage It Takes
There is no blueprint for what Marco’s parents did. No guidebook prepares you to face that question, to consider, while your heart is breaking, whether your child’s passing might extend someone else’s life.
That decision requires a depth of love that transcends personal pain. It requires the ability to look beyond your own suffering and think of strangers in hospital beds, of other parents waiting by their phones, of people who have been told their only hope is a transplant.
Marco’s family found that strength. We honour them for it.
Three Lives, Continuing
In Ontario, the reality of organ donation is stark: on average, 1,400 people are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant at any given time, and tragically, someone dies every three days waiting for one that doesn’t arrive in time.
Marco’s donation changed that equation for three families. Somewhere in this province, three people received an extraordinary gift on what might otherwise have been their final days. They may not know Marco’s name. But his life is woven into theirs now, in the most literal and profound way.
That is a legacy few of us will ever leave behind.
April is Be a Donor Month in Ontario
April is a time when Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network) asks Ontarians to consider registering as organ donors. The timing of Marco’s passing and his family’s decision carries a message worth hearing.
Ninety percent of Ontarians support organ donation. Only 35% are registered.
That gap is not born of callousness; it is born of avoidance. These are conversations most of us put off, assuming there will be time later, or that it won’t come to this. Marco’s family didn’t have the luxury of later. They had only now, and they chose generosity anyway.
If Marco’s story moves you, consider doing two things:
- Register your consent at beadonor.ca. It takes only a few minutes.
- Have the conversation with your family so that if the time ever comes, they can honour your wishes without doubt or additional pain.
To Marco’s Family
Howie, Sacks & Henry is honoured to stand alongside this family, not only as their legal advocates, but as members of a community that has witnessed something remarkable in their grief.
Marco’s life mattered. And because of the people who loved him most, it will continue to matter in the lives he saved, in the families made whole again, in the conversations his story will inspire.
To his parents: your courage in the most unimaginable of moments is a gift to all of us. We carry Marco forward with you.
