What You Need To Know
Severe burn injuries cause excruciating pain, frequently lead to permanent disfigurement and disability, and put victims at serious risk of complications from infections that may be fatal. Within a matter of moments, a serious accidental burn will change a person’s life forever.
Despite years of regulatory warnings about the incredible risks of flame jetting from these products, inadequate safety labelling, and the recent American recall, certain retailers continue to sell Colsen-branded fire pits and similar types of alcohol-fueled tabletop fire bowl, pot, or pit in Canada to date.
The Products
- The CPSC recall notice encompasses seven models of Colsen-branded tabletop open fire pits ranging in size from 5 to 18 inches wide.
- The affected models are grey or black and may be round, square, rectangular, hexagonal, or skull-shaped.
- When the products are sold in their original packaging, a flame extinguisher with the “Colsen” brand printed on it is included.
- The products were manufactured by Colsen Fire Pits LLC, in Miami, Florida.
- The affected fire pits were sold online directly from the manufacturer’s website at https://colsenfirepits.com/ and from the following retailers: Amazon.com, FlipShop, Grommet, Meta, Sharper Image, TikTok, Wayfair, Walmart.
- Although Colsen brand fire pits have not been recalled in Canada to date, Health Canada has issued multiple warnings and recall orders for similar tabletop fire products in recent years.
The Problem
- Invisible alcohol flames can cause “flame jetting” incidents where fire flashes back to the isopropyl alcohol container when a person refills the reservoir. The fire may then propel out of the alcohol container and onto nearby people or items.
- Flash fires can also occur when alcohol splashes, spills, or leaks out of the fire pit reservoir during use. Flash fires create larger, hotter flames that may escape the fire pit.
- Injuries can occur quickly and unexpectedly, causing severe and fatal burns in less than one second.
- This alleged defect may affect Colsen-branded and other tabletop fire pits.
The Injuries
- To date, the CPSC has received 31 reports of “flame jetting” and flames escaping from the fire pit’s concrete container. These incidents resulted in 19 burn injuries.
- Victims in two incidents suffered third degree burns to more than 40% of their bodies
- The CSPC reports that at least six incidents involved “surgery, prolonged medical treatment, admission to burn treatment facilities, short-term disability, loss of function, physical therapy, or permanent disfigurement.”
Action Required
- Immediately stop using any tabletop fire pit fitting the product descriptions above.
- If you have purchased a second-hand fire pit or received a used fire pit that may fit the above descriptions, it is advisable not to use it out of an abundance of caution. If you have given this product as a gift, contact the receiver to alert them of the serious risk of injury as soon as possible.
- The CSPC recommends disposing of any Colsen-branded fire pit. Prior to disposal, take photos or videos of the units (while not in use) in your home as an additional form of proof of ownership if you do not have original receipts of packaging.
- Despite the above recommendation please do not dispose of the tabletop fire pit if you have been injured as we will want to inspect the product.
- Anyone in Canada who has suffered burns or other injuries from these products should contact an experienced personal injury lawyer as soon as possible for a free, no obligation initial consultation.
