About The Drowsy Chaperone
This original Canadian madcap musical was born out of a spoof on the upcoming nuptials of two friends who were in the comedy scene in Toronto. Originally devised as a skit for their stag party, then taking the Toronto Fringe Festival by storm, this musical went on to a critically acclaimed run on Broadway and the West End. With music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, and Book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, The Drowsy Chaperone is the winner of 5 Tony Awards, as well as 7 Drama Desk Awards.
This beloved musical farce sees a die-hard musical theatre lover put on his favourite record – the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical by the same name – as the recording literally comes to life before our very eyes to reveal hilarity and hijinks on the day of a high society wedding. With a cast of crazy characters, and a bevy of show-stopping song and dance numbers, The Drowsy Chaperone is a clever send up of the musical genre itself and a brilliant musical that revisits the Jazz Age.
